Reconnecting Magnetic Flux Tubes as a Source of in Situ Acceleration in Extragalactic Radio Sources

چکیده

Many extended extragalactic radio sources require a local in situ acceleration mechanism for electrons, in part because the synchrotron lifetimes are shorter than the bulk travel time across the emitting regions. If the magnetic field in these sources is localized in flux tubes, reconnection may occur between regions of plasma β (ratio of particle to magnetic pressure) << 1, even though β averaged over the plasma volume may be ∼ > 1. Reconnection in low β regions is most favorable to acceleration from reconnection shocks. The reconnection X-point regions may provide the injection electrons for their subsequent non-thermal shock acceleration to distributions reasonably consistent with observed spectra. Flux tube reconnection might therefore be able to provide in situ acceleration required by large scale jets and lobes. Are the hotspots of radio galaxies the sites of in - situ acceleration of relativistic particles ?

Using a large set of optically detected hotspots in powerful extragalactic double radio sources, we examine the basic question of whether the detection of optical synchrotron radiation requires in-situ acceleration of relativistic electrons within the hotspots/lobes. For this, we take into account the jet’s bulk relativistic motion, as well as its likely misalignment from the plane of the sky. ...

The “ Number – Flux Density ” Relation for Milliarcsecond Structures in Extragalactic Radio Sources

" Number – flux density " distributions for total and correlated flux densities at various interferometer spacings in 355 extragalactic radio sources are analysed. Qualitative conclusions on the population of milliarcsecond components in these sources are presented. The progress of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) technology over the past decades made it possible to proceed from studyin...

HerMES: Disentangling active galactic nuclei and star formation in the radio source population

We separate the extragalactic radio source population above∼50μJy into active galactic nuclei (AGN) and star-forming sources. The primary method of our approach is to fit the infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs), constructed using Spitzer/IRAC and MIPS and Herschel/SPIRE photometry, of 380 radio sources in the Extended Chandra Deep Field-South. From the fitted SEDs, we determine the re...

MHD waves in the early universe and genesis of cosmic gamma ray bursts

It is conjectured that energy sources of the gamma ray bursts are similar to energy sources which trigger solar and stellar transient activity phenomena like flares, plasma accelerated flows in the flux tubes and, dissipation of energy and acceleration of particles by the MHD waves. Phenomenologically we examine in detail the following energy sources which may trigger gamma ray bursts : (i) cos...

Background and aims: Extremely low frequency magnetic field (ELF) is part of Spectrum of electromagnetic waves with range 30 to 300 Hz. The average magnetic field exposures in the workplace have been found to be higher in “electrical occupations” than in other occupations such as office work. The interaction between magnetic fields produced by power lines and substations with living organisms a...
